The veteran comedian fails to disappoint once again.
This past week I was fortunate to enough to have a couple of tickets to comedian Bill Burr’s latest stand up, “Bill Burr: Slight Return,” at the Capital One Arena in D.C. To his credit, the arena was absolutely packed, with no empty seats in sight. Even more fortunate for me, I was in the company of a lovely and intelligent lady that had never heard of or seen Bill Burr; this would be her very first time on the roller coaster.
At 54, Burr continues to impress with his incisive observations and absolute fearlessness. True to form, Burr’s jokes and anecdotes generally follow his tried-and-true formula:
· Make an outrageous statement
· Observe and recognize the audience pulling back in shock
· Explain yourself humorously and logically
· Get the audience back on board
In this way, Burr masterfully entertained the audience for over an hour, taking all of us on a figurative roller coaster ride of shock, laughter, and dare I say it, awe. His observations remain as sharp and on point as ever, and his writing remains concise and effective. He typically describes his comedy as a bunch of dick and shit jokes, but there is clearly a much more impactful intelligence at work here. You don’t appeal to such a wide swath of the population – varied races, genders, nationalities – and succeed as a stand-up comedian, movie actor/writer, and creator/writer of an animated series, with nothing more than dick and shit jokes...it simply doesn’t work that way. And, much as we’ve seen in his previous specials (most are available on Netflix), several recurring themes came up, to include guns, his family, and – of course – his temper. Yes, he’s still working on it.
If you’re still able to snag tickets to Burr’s visit to an arena near you, I highly recommend it. You won’t be disappointed, and I think you’ll find that older age has not mellowed Bill in the least. In fact, he might be crankier than before, while remaining every bit as humorous.
As for the young lady accompanying me to the show, I think it’s fair to say Bill Burr increased his fan base by a count of one.
